Students have been quite serious and interested in our color studies. Through a systematic mixing routine, students expand from 8 to 64 colors just by mixing from their watercolor box. It's mesmerizing and it's beautiful. This process is a lead in to our next project - paintings inspired by the colors of the fall season.
In our assessment of this project, students were asked the following questions. Quite honestly, the responses are just an art teachers dream. Read on.
1. How do you think creating the color grid affected your understanding of color?
Student responses:
I understand that color is far bigger than just the rainbow.
I think it helped me understand that color isn’t tacky - it’s beautiful!
That there are actually so many colors.
Now I know you can basically mix anything together as long as you have primary colors.
Some of the colors they made I would never have guessed!
I hadn’t seen some of those colors mixed before and it was cool to know you could make so many different colors with a palette of so little colors
Students were also asked:
2. Describe how you felt when creating the color grid.
Student responses:
I liked that someone as untalented as me could make something that looks that good.
Everybody was calm when doing art.
Calming and fun.
It was really fun and engaging.
It was relaxing.
Focused.
Joyful
I like painting.
I felt excited and curious about what kind of colors I would make.
Artistic.
Flabbergasted.
