A new crew of 6th Grade art students is busy creating snowflakes as we head out to holiday break. After looking at photographs of snowflakes, students got right to work drawing their own. They will then carve these designs and print them onto rice paper before using them again in an upcoming clay project.
Definition of abstraction
1a: the act or process of abstracting : the state of being abstracted b: an abstract idea or term c: freedom from representational qualities in art. After our drawing unit (which focused on still life) was finished, we moved 180 degrees around the circle to abstractionism. The two units couldn't be more different. One focused on drawing something specific and real, with great detail, while the other on abstract concepts of shape, color, and line. One unit used a simple pencil, while the other, acrylic paint of all colors. Students chose five shapes to respond to with warm or cool colors. Students blocked out color areas and then added line details in black or the opposite color family. This unified the compositions which resulted in some pretty incredible abstract art. Hurrah for us, because some of these paintings will be on display in Senator Bernie Sanders office January through March of 2020. |
