There’s a lot of power and joy in the word YES.
Immediately when we hear a yes, or get a high five followed by an emphatic “YES!," we can’t help but feel a surge of happiness. Research says that by the time we are adults, we will hear NO repeated at least 50,000 times. In contrast, we will hear YES repeated only 7000 times. (It’s no wonder we become self critical!) To begin the semester in Art 7-8 and Art 6, we talked about the power of YES. We looked at a variety of artist rendered YES’s, and talked about different styles of font, including block letters, bubble letters and graffiti. Students were given a 5x7 card, and were asked to design their own YES card - choosing from multiple art materials - including paint pens, metallic markers, gel pens, sharpies, watercolor, color pencils, crayons, pencil, etc. Students were also asked to choose a language - create a YES card in English or in another language. Enjoy the art, and know that art at EMS is a YES!
